Participation in Freedom Struggle (1901 – 1910)
By the turn of the twentieth century, anti-imperialistic sentiment was
growing and nationalist spirit gaining ground specially among educated
Indians. Lala Amir Chand, the then Headmaster and Avadh Bihari Lal,
Mathematics teacher of the School were ardent patriots and they jumped
into India's freedom struggle. They participated in the bomb attack on
the Viceroy of India, Lord Hardinge on December 23, 1912 in front of the
Town Hall in Delhi's famed Chandni Chowk. They were caught and sentenced
to death.
Lala Amir Chand and Avadh Bihari Lal were hanged on May 8, 1915 near the
present Maulalna Azad Medical College in Central Delhi. A commemorative
plaque at the site proclaims their supreme sacrifice for freedom of the
motherland. The busy road "Nai Sarak" in the commercial district of
Chandni Chowk is also now renamed after Lala Amir Chand in his sacred
memory.
The bomb attack on the Viceroy infuriated the British Government. As a
consequence, they withdrew the financial grant given by the Education
Department resulting in severe hardship and decline of the School. |
